We all know that Shahrukh Khan’s role in Devdas, a doomed lover, was initially played by Dilip Kumar in the 1955 film of the same name. Well, SRK feels, Dilip Kumar cannot be imitated.
“You can’t imitate Mr Dilip Kumar. Whoever copies Dilip Kumar, they are idiots like me.”Shahrukh was at the launch of Nasreen Munni Kabir’s book “The Dialogue of Devdas”.
Dilip Kumar was invited to the event too. However, the star couldn’t make it, but he did send a letter and Shahrukh Khan read it out at the event at the Mehboob Studios.
Now, after almost 6 years for the film, SRK feels it was stupidity on his part to do Devdas.
“I am not someone who would like to do something which has been so beautifully crafted. I have a very deep regard for the fact that my parents loved ‘Devdas’. I was very young and stupid that I said yes and did it, but as I am getting mature, hopefully more intelligent, and perhaps would not be able to do it this time,” the 46-year-old actor said.
Shahrukh also reveals that he did not watch Dilip Kumar’s version of Devdas. Had he watched the film, he would have never done the remake.
“Had we seen the film before making it, we would never had the guts to make it. Sanjay, Aishwarya and Madhuri we all felt that first we should finish the film then we should watch it,” he said.
